Oscar Wilde’s brilliant 1895 comedic masterpiece, The Importance of Being Earnest, follows two bachelor friends, Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff, who each invent elaborate fictitious alter egos—named “Ernest”—to escape the tedious social obligations of Victorian high society. Their deceptions quickly unravel when both men fall in love with women (Gwendolen Fairfax and Cecily Cardew) who are stubbornly obsessed with marrying a man named Ernest, leading to a series of witty misunderstandings, mistaken identities, and a surprising final revelation about Jack’s true heritage.
